Hastelloy N Pipes are formed using a nickel-base alloy used as a container material for molten fluoride salts. These pipes are known for providing good oxidation resistance to hot fluoride salts in the temperature range of 1300 to 1600°F. The corrosion attack on Hastelloy N Pipes in molten fluoride salts at that temperature range is found to be effectively lower. Therefore, it is expected that a Pipe made of this material will be most useful in environments involving fluorides at high temperatures; however, the Pipes compare favorably with other Hastelloy Pipes in various corrosive media. Therefore, it is particularly suggested that these Pipes be tested in molten halides of beryllium, zirconium, lithium, sodium, potassium, thorium or uranium.
Hastelloy N Pipes also exhibit excellent oxidation resistance in the air. As a result, it shows a guarantee for continuous operations at temperatures. Tensile tests have indicated no tendency toward embrittlement for prolonged periods at higher temperatures. In addition, this Hastelloy N has high-grade weldability and can be readily forged. This grade has been successfully extruded and processed into high-quality seamless or manufactured as welded and drawn pipes. Solution heat-treatment is recommended for these pipes after the hot or cold working.
